NSW: Teachers call for more incentives to stem male shortage
The New South Wales government has been told teaching needs to be made more attractive
with training incentives to stem the critical shortage of men in the education system.
Meetings are being held across the state as part of an inquiry into the male teacher
shortage with a report expected to be handed to Education Minister JOHN AQUILINA by November.
A survey of 110 NSW primary schools by the Daily Telegraph found many students reach
high school without ever having a class with a male teacher.
In primary schools, an overwhelming 83 per cent of teachers are female.
NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Education TONY STEWART and other government officials
have been visiting schools as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Mr STEWART says children, particularly those who live with single mothers, often have
no positive male role models until they reach high school.
