FED:Labor MPs back embattled colleague=4
Senior Liberal Eric Abetz said former prime minister John Howard would have handled
the issue very differently .
"He would not have just had a cursory discussion," the senator told reporters.
"There would have been a grilling of the individual and if need be the consequences to flow."
Senator Abetz said the prime minister was trying to sidestep the issue by suggesting
that she only had a brief discussion with Mr Thomson.
"(That) is an abrogation of her duty and of her responsibility to ensure that she can
genuinely have full confidence in everybody in her team."
Senator Abetz demanded Mr Thomson front the media to give a full explanation.
Nationals Senate leader Barnaby Joyce said Mr Thomson was in "a bit of a pickle, adding
the MP's explanations were "completely and utterly implausible".
"If it wasn't him then the person who identified his life and got him to sign the back
of the credit card slip must have been looking at someone who looked awfully like someone
who's called Craig Thomson," he told reporters.
