Senior Liberal Eric Abetz said former prime minister John Howard would have handled
the issue very differently .

"He would not have just had a cursory discussion," the senator told reporters.

"There would have been a grilling of the individual and if need be the consequences to flow."

Senator Abetz said the prime minister was trying to sidestep the issue by suggesting
that she only had a brief discussion with Mr Thomson.

"(That) is an abrogation of her duty and of her responsibility to ensure that she can
genuinely have full confidence in everybody in her team."

Senator Abetz demanded Mr Thomson front the media to give a full explanation.

Nationals Senate leader Barnaby Joyce said Mr Thomson was in "a bit of a pickle, adding
the MP's explanations were "completely and utterly implausible".

"If it wasn't him then the person who identified his life and got him to sign the back
of the credit card slip must have been looking at someone who looked awfully like someone
who's called Craig Thomson," he told reporters.

GSMA Taps Ruckus Wireless as Finalist in Global Mobile Awards for Best Mobile Broadband Technology
Type: News

Ruckus Wireless announced that its ZoneFlex Mobile Internet Smart Wi-Fi System was named a finalist in the GSMA Global Mobile Awards program in the category of Best Mobile Broadband Technology.

The winners of the Global Mobile Awards will be announced February 15, at the Mobile World Congress event, taking place in Barcelona, Spain.
One of 115 finalists across 10 categories, out of more than 470 entrants, the new ZoneFlex Mobile Internet Wi-Fi System was recognized for using patented Wi-Fi technology to address cellular network capacity and coverage concerns stemming from the growth of smart mobile devices and media-rich Mobile Internet applications.

According to a release, the Ruckus Mobile Internet Smart Wi-Fi System now lets operators add broadband bandwidth and wireless coverage in dense user environments where cellular network capacity isn't enough. Ruckus-patented Wi-Fi innovations now give mobile operators a complementary microcell strategy as they evolve their macro cellular networks to 4G/LTE.

"Our congratulations go to all the nominees in this year's Global Mobile Awards," said Rob Conway, CEO of the GSMA. "To get down to just 115 nominees from more than 470 high-caliber entries certainly presented our judges with a tough challenge this year. It is a great achievement to be shortlisted among such a high quality field of entrants. We eagerly anticipate the announcement of the winners at the Mobile World Congress and look forward to showcasing another great year of innovation for the mobile industry."

"As a Wi-Fi technology innovator, it's a distinct honor to be recognized by one of the foremost mobile communications organizations in the world, for our achievements in making Wi-Fi a more powerful and strategic asset to mobile operators around the globe," said Selina Lo, CEO of Ruckus Wireless. "Smartphone users everywhere are experiencing the pain of over-tapped networks. Until now, Wi-Fi has been used primarily as a technology of convenience and not a key part of the cellular infrastructure. We're changing all that with new Wi-Fi technology that gives mobile operators the carrier-class reliability that has long eluded them."

Vic: Nixon considered Foster's before Black Saturday anniversary

MELBOURNE, April 16 AAP - Embattled bushfire recovery chair Christine Nixon considered
accepting a Foster's board appointment before the first anniversary of Black Saturday.

But Victorian Premier John Brumby urged her to delay accepting the plush non-executive
corporate director position until the anniversary passed and she had completed more of
her reconstruction work in devastated communities.

Mr Brumby says he felt it was more appropriate for Ms Nixon to accept a paid corporate
role after the first anniversary of Australia's most devastating bushfires, which killed
173 people, had passed.

"She raised it with me. I suggested that she delay taking that position," he told ABC
Radio on Friday.

"I wanted it deferred until the new plans had been put in place and agreed across the
reconstruction areas."

Ms Nixon had been approached to take the board position with the brewer winemaker in
early 2010, he said.

At that point, Ms Nixon had not even completed half of her two-year government contract
as head of the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority.

Foster's Group announced her board appointment on April 1.

Mr Brumby said he hoped 99 per cent of Ms Nixon's reconstruction efforts are completed
by the second anniversary of the February 7 2009 fires.

Bushfire survivors are now divided on their views of Ms Nixon, Victoria's chief police
commissioner at the time of the Black Saturday fires, after her contradictory testimony
before the Teague royal commission into the devastating bushfires.

She has admitted she spent three crucial hours, as the fires raged, at a pub over dinner
with friends and had no contact with emergency services during that time.

She kept her dinner reservation despite being told minutes earlier that the fires would
likely be devastating and kill people.

Ms Nixon has defended her actions, saying her management style is to always appoint
others into key roles and delegate responsibility, which she did during the fires.

Mr Brumby has maintained that despite some bushfire survivors being furious at the
revelations, Ms Nixon will not be sacked from her role as chair of the Victorian Bushfire
Reconstruction and Recovery Authority (VBRRA).

"I acknowledge there is strongly held views in the community but I think the work of
the authority, the work that she does, is too important at this stage," he said on Friday.

"I've supported her continuing in her role despite the fact she made an error of judgment
last year."

It's believed Ms Nixon left Melbourne on Thursday to escape the recent negative publicity.

FED: Brown launches one last plea on ETS

By Peter Veness

CANBERRA, Dec 2 AAP - Debate has resumed in the Senate on the government's emissions
trading scheme.

A vote on the 11 bills, setting up the carbon pollution reduction scheme, is likely
to take place at some point in the first hour after the upper house started debate at
10am (AEDT).

With the bills headed for defeat, Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce rejoiced.

"It's absolutely humbling," he said of the involvement of many voters in the climate
change debate.

"The Australian people are going to be the greatest winners."

Australian Greens leader Bob Brown, who is also voting against the carbon pollution
reduction scheme but for different reasons, said the scheme was against the interest of
average Australians.

"We have, in this legislation, a suite of amendments ... which would have made this
truly world class," Senator Brown said.

The third reading debate, presently underway, precedes a final vote on the legislation.

FED: Border policy should aim for no boats, Turnbull

DARWIN, April 24 AAP - Australia should aim for a "no boats" border protection policy,
Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull says.

The seventh boat of asylum seekers to arrive in Australian waters this year was intercepted
off Western Australia on Wednesday, less than a week after another refugee boat exploded
killing five and wounding dozens more.

The latest arrivals have stoked renewed debate over Australia's immigration laws amid
an influx of asylum seekers fleeing their troubled homelands, including Afghanistan and
Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has warned that many more boats will come, but he denies
that it is a result of his government shifting from the harsh policies of the previous
government under John Howard.

Mr Turnbull said Australia was now much softer and more receptive to people smuggling.

"It is easier to get into Australia under Mr Rudd's government," he told reporters
in Darwin on Friday.

"There is no doubt that the Rudd government in changing the policies of the previous
government has created the impression that Australia is a soft target and that has contributed
... to people smugglers testing the envelope by putting more boats with more asylum seekers
on them on the water.

"The object of Australia's border protection policies should be no boats.

"We do not want this people-smuggling trade to continue. We want it to be stopped."

NSW: Instructor dreamt of flying since she was a young girl

By Adam Bennett

SYDNEY, Dec 19 AAP - A young flight instructor who died when her plane crashed after
a mid-air collision over Sydney had dreamt of flying since she was in primary school.

Joanne Ethell, 20, hoped to eventually work for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, her uncle says.

Ms Ethell and her 18-year-old student Chandrika Gaur died when their Cessna 152 was
involved in a mid-air collision and crashed into the back of a house at Casula, in Sydney's
southwest, on Thursday.

The 89-year-old flight instructor in the second plane, former World War II pilot Ken
Andrews, and his student managed to fly their single-engine Liberty 10km back to Bankstown
airport and landed safely.

Ms Ethell's uncle Brett Ethell said her Lismore-based parents Kay and Gryff were devastated.

They would travel to Sydney soon to collect their daughter's body, he said.

The young pilot was an instructor for flight training school Basair, based at Bankstown
Airport, and had only graduated from the company's Cessnock-based academy this year.

She had moved to Sydney with the goal of returning to Cessnock and her boyfriend Dan
Rodgers, a Basair instructor at the Hunter Valley academy, Mr Ethell said.

Her ultimate dream was to become a pilot for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, he said.

"Her mother told me this morning that when she went through her old books that she
found a year six schoolbook (in which) she had written in the back that she wanted to
be a pilot," Mr Ethell told AAP.

"Her ultimate goal was to fly for the Royal Flying Doctor Service - she didn't want
to fly 747s, she wanted to fly for the Royal Flying Doctor Service."

By becoming a pilot Ms Ethell had followed her father and her recently deceased grandfather,
Dr Guy Ethell, into the cockpit.

While her father was a recreational pilot, Dr Ethell had learnt to fly to keep up his
rural medical practice in Queensland's southeast.

"They (Joanne and her father) both loved flying - I guess they got it from Joanne's
grandfather," Mr Ethell said.

"He was a flying doctor, for want of a better word, a flying physician.

"His practice was in southeast Queensland, in the country, and it covered so many square
kilometres so he thought he would fly a plane to get round to see his patients."

Ms Ethell was the adventurous type who also loved snowboarding, water skiing and deep-sea
fishing, her uncle said.

"Her father was rapt that she could fly a plane before she could drive a car, he thought
that was a big deal," he said.

"I noticed that when we were at her grandfather's funeral about a month ago, she'd
gone from a young girl to become a young woman who was completely happy with life.

"She'd achieved a lifelong dream to fly, and to die this way is tragic."

Mr Ethell said the family wanted to know how the tragedy happened.

"Everyone would like to know why, but I think as far as Kay and Gryff go, they're just
happy for the civil aviation authority to do their investigation and whatever happens
there happens," he said.

Vic: Free, discounted petrol to entice more tourists

By Charisse Ede

MELBOURNE, Aug 11 AAP - Tourism operators in regional Victoria are offering free or
heavily discounted fuel in a bid to entice more visitors as petrol prices continue to
soar.

Accommodation owners and major tourist destinations such as Sovereign Hill are offering
up to $50 free fuel with bookings and ticket sales.

The Victorian Tourism Centre this week advertised special "getaway" deals around Victoria
that include free $25 and $50 BP pre/pay cars for multiple bookings.

Victorian Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) chairman Jeremy Johnson said this was a growing
trend, as more tourism operators tried to stem a decline in visitors to country Victoria.

"Petrol vouchers are increasing in usage," he said.

"In particular for regional areas, it's a way of overcoming the high petrol prices."

Mr Johnson said destinations such as Rutherglen, in Victoria's north east, introduced
petrol vouchers and rebates last year.

One holiday unit in nearby Bright is offering vouchers for 10 cents a litre off petrol
for bookings made until the end of this month.

Mr Johnson, who is also chief executive of Sovereign Hill in Ballarat, said they had
offered petrol vouchers during school holidays.

Sovereign Hill provided 10 cents a litre off petrol while a local service station provided
an extra four cents a litre off.

Mr Johnson said the offer was capped at 40 litres so was worth just over $5.

"The research we had was that it was welcomed. It wasn't the absolute driver of the
decision to come here, but it was a welcome bonus," he said.

"And it gave us a point of competitive edge to other regional destinations."

Mr Johnson said Tourism Victoria statistics showed an alarming drop in domestic tourism
to regional areas.

He said between 2004 and 2005, there had been a 22 per cent drop in visits to the Goldfields
region, an 18 per cent decrease in Gippsland and 17 per cent drop to the Mornington Peninsula.

But conversely, areas close to Melbourne have had increased visits, with a seven per
cent rise in the Yarra Valley, just an hour from Melbourne.

He said while the high cost of petrol was the major contributor to the fall in visits,
it was also affected by competitive factors such as low-cost airlines and people being
time poor.

The group is not short of cash, but the two cultures of the different entities have not meshed smoothly. The share price has dipped by 75 per cent since the merger in 2000. A shout out to all the Peeps, and the peeps who eat 'em.(News)

Byline: Burt Constable

While not the first Jewish family with Bethlehem roots to play a vital role in Easter, the Born family certainly can't be ignored.

Their Just Born candy factory in Bethlehem, Pa., will sell 600 million of those cute, fluffy, sugary, chick-shape Marshmallow Peeps this Easter, says John Kerr, group product manager at Just Born.

That's more than two chicks for every man, woman and child in the United States.

"The brand has been such a symbol," Kerr says. "It really has kind of an icon status."

And a devoted, often demented, flock of faithful fans.

The Internet is full of Web sites devoted to all things Peep.

The official Just Born "Peepsville" Web site tells the fascinating history of the company and doles out odd facts such as how the first Peeps (invented in 1953) each took 27 hours to produce. A candy maker had to squeeze each individual chick from a pastry tube and then hand-paint the eyes.

Today, high-tech machines pop out a Peep every six minutes. The Just Born factory cranks out 3.8 million marshmallow treats a day. You can tour the factory online at www.marshmallowpeeps.com.

But if you mistakenly type in www.marshmallowpeeps.org, you'll be transported to Tracy and Mia's Peep-O-Rama Web site, which makes an art of Peeps. The site includes Peeps-related artwork, ranging from a painting of the "The Four Peeps of the Apocalypse" to a photograph of four Peeps posed around a table playing a miniature card game to a photo of a pair of punk Peeps sporting pierced bills.

For a more scientific peek at Peeps, pop onto the Web site www.learnlink.emory.edu/peep, where Emory University scientists James Zimring and Gary Falcon conduct a battery of experiments designed to test the Peeps' reaction to dangers such as alcohol, smoking and microwaves, where the poor Peeps pump up like provoked pufferfish.

Plenty of amateurs conduct experiments with Peeps, including the young man who claims that the only safe way to dispose of Peeps is to boil each chick in a vat of Mountain Dew.

But when it comes to Peeps disposal, Dennis "The King" Gross is a one-man Peepinator. He downed a record 88 chicks in 30 minutes while winning last year's Peep 2-K Peeps-eating competition.

"He actually went and got a pizza after eating 88 Peeps just because he's crazy," says Dave Smith, organizer and self-proclaimed Archbishop of the annual Peep-Off in Sacramento, Calif. (For details, see www.nokilli.com/food/peep2001.htm.)

The Gross appetite for destruction has Peep-Off fans thinking this could be the year when the 100-Peeps barrier falls.

The fifth-annual Peep-Off (dubbed "2001: A Peep Odyssey Peep- ageddon") is scheduled for April 28, after Easter, which allows Smith to buy the Peeps cheap.

"I buy them after Easter so I can get 2,000 for 40 or 50 bucks," Smith says, noting the Peeps keep until next year (perhaps next decade) if necessary.

Last year, the cops set up barricades at the Peep-Off, which thrilled the participants (mostly geeks and egghead types), Smith says, adding that many of the contestants do wash down their Peeps with Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer and stage a Peeps fight at the end.

The Pabst-Peeps combo has been known to literally bring competitors to their knees. (For the record, Gross downs them with Diet Pepsi and you don't hear, or see, a Peep out of him.)

For a much more tasteful take on Peeps, marthastewart.com features a lovely recipe for do-it-yourself marshmallow chicks. All you need is a rimmed baking sheet, a piping kit, a pastry bag, turbinado sugar, luster dust, a No. 1 icing tip, a parchment-lined airtight container and a personality wound so tightly that you'd think this would be a good use of your time.

For the record, the Just Born folks prefer you buy your Peeps and eat them at a safe moderate pace or use them for decorating. But they understand that their treat inspires dozens of Web sites (I didn't even mention the Peeps Show parody porn site with "hot chicks" or the one hosted by a drag queen who fashions outfits from Peeps).

"To a certain degree we're flattered that people are so enamored with Peeps," Kerr says. "Peeps is a brand that's very unique and fun and whimsical. Plus, it's candy. How can you not have a sense of humor about candy?"

-US states launch untitrust probes into Google.

CORPORATE IT UPDATE-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

24 June 2011 -- Three US states have launched antitrust probes against Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), stepping up regulatory pressure against the Internet search group ahead of an expected federal investigation into the group's market dominance, the Financial Times reported.

Attorneys-general in California, New York and Ohio have opened investigations into the potential risks for online competition deriving from the dominant position of Google. The moves by the three states follow a probe launched by the Texas attorney-general last year.

A person familiar with the investigations said that the growing number of states where Google is feeling anti-competition pressure is likely to take considerable resources and management attention.

The probes opened recently by the three states are still at an early stage, people close to the proceedings said.

SCHWARZER BACKS WORLD CUP BOBBY.(Features)

Byline: MARTIN LIPTON

MARK SCHWARZER banged the drum for a potential World Cup rival last night by telling Fabio Capello he cannot keep on ignoring Bobby Zamora's England claims.

Zamora's instinctive 10th of the season was deserved reward for a performance in which he bullied the life out of Manchester United's makeshift back three.

Just a few weeks ago, Zamora (far right) become involved in a verbal battle with the Fulham fans who moaned about his lack of productivity, with websites berating the striker. But five goals in his last four games have seen him push his case for World Cup selection.

Fulham goalkeeper Schwarzer is heading for South Africa with Australia, and says Zamora should make Capello's England squad.

"Bobby's had a bit of stick from the fans but who hasn't had stick on the internet?" said Schwarzer.

"What matters is the work Bobby has done for us. That's been very under-rated and for the past three or four months he has been superb.

"He holds the ball up and throws himself about, but now he has added a few goals. That breeds more confidence, so he is really bounding around the place.

"He was exceptional against United and took real control of the game. If he keeps playing like this it will be difficult for England not to take a look at him."

Ford's board may speed job, factory reductions

Ford Motor Co.'s board of directors began a two-day meeting Wednesday to contemplate a plan that could have the ailing automaker slash jobs and reduce factories further and faster in its quest to revive profits.

Details from the meeting, which is expected to continue today, were not available Wednesday.

Many industry analysts say the new round of restructuring is crucial to the company's future and will involve cuts to bring Ford's production capacity in line with its declining sales and market share. White- collar jobs and benefits reportedly are also in line for reductions.

Mortgage applications index up 3.2%

Mortgage applications in the U.S. rose last week to the highest level in more than three months after a recent decline in borrowing costs spurred home buying.

The Mortgage Bankers Association's index of applications to buy a home or refinance an existing loan increased 3.2 percent to 584.2. The group's gauge of purchases rose 5.3 percent to a nine-week high. Refinancing edged up as well.

The report suggests the slowdown in housing after a five-year boom will be gradual and unlikely to jeopardize economic growth, economists said. Smaller gains in home prices, mortgage rates close to a five-month low and builder incentives such as free granite countertops are sparking interest.

"There are still people buying homes and still people selling homes, and there's a market force in place to soften the blow," said Bill Mulvihill, an economist at First Trust Advisors LP in Lisle, Ill. "I don't expect the housing slowdown to have a noticeable impact on consumer spending. It'll be a gradual, orderly decline."

The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage edged up to 6.32 percent from the prior week's 6.31 percent, which was the lowest level since March, the report showed.

The index of total mortgage applications rose to the highest level since 588 in early May.

Building a Solid Practice: Practice management software provides a foundation.(certified public accountant)

The solid foundation of any CPA firm rests squarely on the shoulders of management. And in order to properly manage and react to change, you need a great software system that captures, reports, and empowers users to react quickly to what is often a fast-paced and ever-changing marketplace.

Most packages began their lives as simple time and billing software and gradually evolved into completely integrated practice management systems. Capturing not only the daily time activities of all staff members, they also often tie into marketing databases, due-date monitoring, scheduling, and customer relationship management.

Key features found in the most popular systems include the following:

Time and billing. Today's systems are almost universally strong in the capturing and reporting of time. You'll want to make sure that your system allows for flexible invoice formats because there are nearly as many variations to an invoice format as there are clients. Make sure all types of billing arrangements are supported, including fixed-fee and not-to-exceed arrangements. Most important is the ability to report on the profit or loss of each individual engagement, as that is the only way to improve your future service offerings.

Scheduling and shared calendars. Each firm needs to efficiently manage its staffing to make certain the amount of non-productive time is kept to the absolute minimum. The most popular calendar in use is Microsoft Outlook, so some integration to Outlook is essential. There should be a way for all calendars in an office to be pooled and viewed so that scheduling gaps can quickly be found and resources directed to more efficient (billable) uses.

Marketing. Maintaining a common mailing list is one of the most powerful-and often underestimated-features of any program. The less you have to re-key data, the better the odds are that you'll create a master list of prospective clients that you can use to proactively mail your firm's newsletter. The better systems will eventually include the ability to not only capture email addresses but perhaps generate the electronic HTML newsletters as well.

Custom report writer. No matter how good the package, there's always room for improvement in reporting. At a minimum, your selected software should support a common file format, such as SQL, Access, or dBase. Often, an ODBC connection is the best transfer method, since you then can make use of the common reporting tools such as Crystal Report Writer to analyze and further dissect data. When financial data is tracked, you'll want the ability to extract the information to Excel. When you look at the extraction procedure, take careful note whether the information comes out formatted for Excel or requires manual intervention to parse values into the individual cells.

CPE tracking. Every state requires licensed CPAs to obtain minimum levels of continuing professional education. Each member of the firm should be able to receive a detailed listing of CPE sessions attended including critical reports flagging excess or deficiencies in any specialized areas. If you have special education requirements determined by additional certification, then the more flexible the CPE tracking, the better.

Remote access. Getting at your data anytime from anyplace is no longer a neat feature. It's a requirement. Since the Internet is the de facto transmission method of choice, you'll want to be certain that the software has the capability to securely connect from any Internet-connected PC. The fewer configurations that are required on the remote end the better. Having to manually configure dozens of home computers to access your office server will quickly negate any cost savings from this feature.

Due-date tracking. By definition, the accounting profession is driven by deadlines. Managing all these deadlines is made simple by the use of due-date tracking. You'll want both one-time and recurring tasks to be easily accessible within your tracking system. Make sure the reporting is flexible enough that you can create your own tailored reports for the clients that have more than a few time-sensitive tasks.

Project or engagement tracking. Budgets can be easy to set and sometimes difficult to track. If you use a system where the budgeting is integrated with time entry, you'll find that the process flows smoother than entering and tracking time on a separate MS Project file or Excel spreadsheet. Make the use of budgets mandatory on every engagement and the software will let you know (like true practice management should) when staff exceeds projected hours.

Accounts receivable. Once the bills have gone out, the fun often begins. All practice management software should allow for tracking of detailed invoice information versus only a balance-forward amount. Though clients never pay them, the ability to add finance charges will be a plus for targeting the chronically delinquent. With the above in mind, consider reviewing any (or all) of the seven practice management solutions presented below. Remember, many of them have different modules that may be available separately so that you only pay for exactly what you need. In addition, some of the companies offer lower cost systems with pared-back capabilities.

CCH ProSystem fx Practice

Many firms are familiar with the ProSystem fx Tax software. The use of ProSystem fx Practice Management software is a logical extension, since it will use the already significant amount of data built up within the tax processing forms and client database.

In addition to the standard time and billing features you'd expect from a robust practice management system, Practice allows for contact management, project tracking, and easy Internet access for the purposes of remote timekeeping. The software uses the Advantage Database Server, which is optimized for speed on multiple platforms, as well as for performance over the Internet.

Data entered into the tax software doesn't have to be re-keyed in order to update billing records. Time spent on a tax project can instantly update the budget vs. actual statistics. Upon completion of the tax return, an invoice can automatically be generated from within Practice. The system will also generate a large number of tracking reports that can be used to make certain no client's tax filings are overlooked.

An upcoming enhancement release promises to further strengthen the ability to track budget and actual time by adding the capability for the Project Management module to access a list of the forms used within the tax processing system. Users will be able to add their own filing due dates to each form, as well as track which forms have been extended. Full reporting by responsible staff members will make the tedious due-date tracking process a bit more manageable. In addition, future releases will allow Microsoft Outlook as one of the data-entry interfaces.

Firms using ProSystem fx Tax should look closely at Practice. The ability to share common data is an overwhelming advantage of this system.

CPAPractice Manager

CPAPractice Manager (previously known as Visual Practice Manager) offers time tracking, contact management, billing, and project management, all in one easy-to-use and fully integrated system. Based upon the popular Microsoft SQL database, reporting is both fast and flexible.

Keeping track of your clients and contacts is simplified by the ability to synchronize data with your Microsoft Outlook address book. This feature allows you not only to fully utilize the features of Outlook, but it can also act as a conduit through which you can synchronize your PDA and other Outlook-aware software packages. The contact management portion of Practice Manager allows for easy lookup and research of outstanding work-in-process and accounts receivable balances. There are an unlimited number of user-defined fields that can be added to the contact database for even more flexibility. Invoices are created on a WYSIWYG screen where you can tailor the terminology, layout, and graphics to meet firm billing standards. The flexibility to include as much detail as the client requires will be a great help in quickly collecting on outstanding invoices. Throughout the billing process, the project tracking component of the software is constantly analyzing the anticipated hours and allows for the easy creation of reports to show each engagement's progress.

During the entry of time, employees have access to a graphical calendar summarizing hours worked. This screen also displays the budget hours for the designated period of time, so employees are always aware of their productivity goals and efforts toward achieving them.

Firms of any size will find a lot to like within Practice Manager. The use of the popular SQL database structure assures not only an industry-standard data foundation, but also virtually guarantees speedy access to your firm's data.

Time Matters

Time Matters offers versions of software specifically tailored to the legal profession, general business, and accounting markets. Each is available in a standard database format or with the Microsoft SQL 7 database in a professional version geared toward firms needing even more reporting and computing horsepower.

Owing to its legal roots, Time Matters does a superb job of tracking and graphically displaying the calendars of staff members. Group calendars can be created to graphically display available time of either individual staffers or an entire team. When viewing different calendars, you can simultaneously create new appointments for staff members that instantly update the schedules for everyone involved. Somewhat unique to Time Matters is the ability to scan and index client documents. Once the documents are in Time Matters, they can be attached to clients, or projects, or listed in a searchable database that can be accessed by everyone within the firm. Full security rights can be assigned to these documents if their access should be restricted to only those working on a specific engagement. Relieving time for subsequent billing is handled through a thoughtfully laid out graphical interface. Simply placing a checkmark next to a time transaction indicates its readiness for billing. All relevant client and project information is contained on the single billing screen that greatly simplifies most of the billing tasks. More complex billing arrangements, as well as the posting of cash receipts or generating statements, require linking Time Matters to Billing Matters, which provides more of the advanced billing features.Time Matters represents a leap forward in features for most CPA firms. The document scanning and indexing should be a welcome addition to firms looking to finally meet up with the promise of the paperless office. Calendaring is especially strong with the graphical representations of single or group calendars. Firms of almost any size will find a solution within Time Matters that's worthy of a second look.

Creative Solutions Practice

The Creative Solutions Practice suite includes Practice, Scheduling, PS/Timekeeper, PS/CPE Management, PS/Market, and PS/Reporter. Tightly integrated, each section of the suite performs admirably at giving you enough relevant and timely information to not only bill your clients, but also manage your practice.

The software also integrates with the other products offered by Creative Solutions, which means that redundant data entry is eliminated and data can be passed seamlessly from tax return preparation to the time and billing or project tracking.

Using PS Timekeeper, staff can enter their time, whether sitting in their chairs inside your office or on the road working at a client site. By using the Web data entry, time can be entered virtually anyplace there is an Internet connection available-thus speeding the collection of your most valuable asset: billable time.

File Cabinet Solution, a separate module that integrates with Practice, allows for the printing of documents to a central paperless location. These documents can be indexed and shared so that remote users have the ability to closely review client documents without having to physically be in your office located near a filing cabinet.

Monitoring due dates and budgets for different filings and tasks is the job of the Scheduling module. You can create an unlimited number of projects that you wish to track and link different tasks to any of the more than 700 tax return form profiles included with the software. Tasks that are not completed in the current year can automatically be rolled into subsequent years where they will be scheduled for completion. The power of the integrated suite of applications is very much a factor in the success of Creative Solutions Practice. By allowing each of the components to freely share information and create intuitive reports, a truly useful management reporting system has been created for even the most demanding firms.

Practice Master

The Tabs3 Practice Master application has roots in the demanding legal marketplace. Although it is available in either Basic or Premier versions, most firms will want to select Premier for its more advanced synchronization and billing features.

Data entry screens can be customized through the use of a special Form Designer. Common data files can be structured as templates to simplify subsequent entry of information.

Staff scheduling is much simpler due to the graphical calendars that allow for viewing single or multiple employees at one time. When a new task needs to be assigned, the use of a drag-and-drop interface allows for the quick addition or change of selected tasks. Security can be established so only authorized users can view certain schedules.Client information can be synchronized directly with Microsoft Outlook. There can be a virtually unlimited number of documents attached to each client record. This is another useful feature for use when staff is working outside the office and have a need to remotely access a client file.

When working outside the office, the data is synchronized via a briefcase feature that makes a selective copy of data on the server. This information is placed on a laptop, which can then be used in the field. Upon returning to the office, all information is synchronized back to the main program. Any firm needing strong scheduling and contact tracking will find much to like within Practice Master. The ability to synchronize to a laptop without the use of an Internet connection is unique and of assistance to firms without access to a fast connection, either in their office or while on-site with a client.

Commercial Logic PowerPM

PowerPM offers CRM, time tracking, billing, project management, and reporting all within one integrated software bundle. The system is also available in a smaller version called TrakTime, which is designed to integrate with QuickBooks and is sold as a monthly service for use by smaller firms.

New users contemplating the PowerPM suite of products might be interested in the data conversion services offered by the company. Rather than spend non-billable technical staff time struggling with an import job, you can elect to send your data directly to Commercial Logic and they'll manipulate and import the data for you.

Using TrakTime Web, staff can directly enter their daily time via the Internet. This requires the use of SQL Server in the main office for the entry as well as an Internet connection on both ends. Any employee timesheets that have not been submitted by a specific date and time can be queried and listed on a report for quick tracking and subsequent follow-up.

Scheduling and forecasting of time spent on engagements is all accomplished through the PowerForeCast module. Both budgets and staff schedules may be separately maintained within this module. Excel users will like that the scheduling information may be either exported or dragged into a spreadsheet for further analysis or computations. Top-level summaries of staff schedules can be further drilled into so that specific client responsibilities are clearly depicted. Commercial Logic has the experience and products to supply nearly any size CPA firm with reliable practice management tools. Its two levels of products are set to meet the needs of both big and small firms, which quite often have very different needs in terms of features, complexity, and price.

Office Tools Pro

Office Tools Pro does a good job of putting all of the relevant data entry and lookup information onto one screen. From within the central data entry forms, you have access to your client data, time sheet, calendar, work in process, and the to-do list, as well as notes.

Contact information can be established in one central location with subsequent notes added to a common screen with appropriate date and staff signatures automatically appended to each note. Phone messages or notes can be attached directly to a client contact. When phone messages are taken, the information within the note can be transferred directly to the billing module to make sure the maximum amount of billable time is captured for even the smallest tasks.

Scheduling is performed on a daily, weekly, or monthly calendar that is laid out graphically. When you have the proper permissions, you can view any staff member's schedule. One great feature included in the scheduling is automatic creation of reminder cards for upcoming appointments. You can even generate confirmation cards for the client to send back acknowledging that the time is correct. The records management aspect of Office Tools Pro is clearly geared toward the firm that has not yet embraced the paperless office. The management of records through this module is primarily aimed at generating labels for and managing paper files. There is no included functionality for indexing and subsequent recalling of any digitally scanned client files.Office Tools Pro is nicely laid out with a common interface and a minimum of different screens to navigate. It is especially suited toward any CPA firm looking to bring all the different practice management functions under one common system. The document management feature, while not embracing scanning, may just be a perfect match for firms looking for a system to track the boxes and boxes of paper files which often appear out of nowhere and threaten to take over whole office complexes.
